Media summary

Cooks Hill House is a project that reorganises and reimagines an existing single-storey terrace, promoting a sustainable approach to renewal through minimal intervention.

Located within a Heritage Conservation area, the narrow 7.9m-wide site fronts an original, character-rich, 1920s gable-ended single-storey brick veneer cottage, which has been extended to the rear by a 1990 addition. The disconnected nature of the house and yard presented opportunities for improvement, as evident in the overgrown and neglected rear yard that completes the 50-metre-long site.

The revised layout reinforces the single-loaded hallway, which links the cottage to a new open-plan kitchen and dining area, seamlessly connecting to a central courtyard garden. The living area is lowered to garden level, fostering a strong indoor-outdoor relationship.

A detached studio with an ensuite offers flexibility for work, accommodation, or relaxation, complemented by a secondary courtyard garden that enhances light, ventilation, and spatial depth across the site.
